How to choose a 3D printer glass hot bed board?

The hot plate of a 3D printer is not the best, only the most suitable, usually depending on the model and consumables you want to print. But if you’re looking for a way to make the model base smoother or easier to separate the model, glass hotbeds are definitely the best fit.

The 3D printing forum circulated a story about the “easy separation” of the glass hot bed. A netizen accidentally bumped into the 3D printer and the model being printed was lost. Of course, this is a bit exaggerated. The glass hot bed still has many advantages:
 1、flatness
The hot bed needs to be flat throughout the 3D printing process to avoid errors. The glass has a high modulus of elasticity and good thermal stability, which ensures that the overall flatness of the hot bed is always consistent. After all, leveling and calibrating is a tedious process.
 2、smooth surface
Designers want the bottom of their work to be as smooth as possible, and the glass guarantees such a smooth finish, providing a mirrored glossy base that most bed surfaces cannot. And because flaw can be transferred to other parts of the model, the rough bottom has been unpopular.
3、Cost
Due to thermal expansion and contraction, many hot bed surfaces cannot be reused. For example, a plastic or acrylic substrate needs to be replaced after a few prints because the surface will begin to peel off. But glass rarely needs to be replaced because it is hardly worn and can be used for multiple 3D printing without replacement. Durable glass like tempered glass does not easily break or rupture when exposed to high strains. The glass hot bed can save a lot of long-term costs and the trouble of replacing the hot bed.
 4、Easy to clean
The hot bed will leave grease, dust and unwanted plastic fragments after use, resulting in uneven print surface. Therefore, they need to be wiped occasionally to ensure they are kept clean before printing. Unlike most beds, the glass 3D printer hot bed is very smooth and makes it easier to spot dirt on the glass platform. This makes it easier to clean with acetone or plain glass cleaner.
 5、Easy to disassemble
When removing a print from a hot bed, it takes time and effort, and accidentally damages the print and wastes time. The separation of the glass hot bed is relatively convenient.
6、Themal conductivity
The plastic is unevenly heated and warps when cooled. The hot bed usually needs to be heated and kept at a certain temperature to prevent warpage and improve print quality. The glass hot bed is excellent in thermal conductivity and is easy to maintain a stable hot bed temperature.
 7、Scratch resistant
Hot beds like acrylic are easily scratched and can get cumbersome when printed. Tempered glass is often scratch-resistant and less susceptible to abrasion or chemical damage. After using a solid glue or adhesive sticker, it is necessary to use a doctor blade to scrape the entire hot bed when the sticker is worn. The glass bed does not have such a problem.
Factors to consider when purchasing a glass hot bed
 1、Size
This is a very obvious parameter. The glass plate needs to fit snugly against the platform to avoid vibration during printing. If it is too large or too small, the bottom plate clamp will not be used.
The other is the optimum thickness. The 3–4 mm glass hot bed is a standard thickness that is sufficient to maintain strength and heat dissipation. If you choose a very thin glass plate (for example, 1mm), it is easy to crack due to high temperature or accidental contact with the hot end. The thickness should be selected for the size of the test bed. For large hot beds, a thickness of 6 mm may need to be considered.
 2、Themal shock resistance
High-performance glass does not break when the temperature changes rapidly. This durability is called thermal shock resistance. When choosing the temperature of the 3D printer nozzle, choose a suitable glass hot bed.
 3、Heat resistance
Even with tempered glass, repeated heating and cooling can cause it to lose strength. However, there are still a lot of special glass on the market, which can be considered if it is often used at extreme limits. For example, ceramic glass can be used at extremely high temperatures, with consistent strength and without the effects of heating and cooling cycles. Another commonly used glass plate is borosilicate glass, which consists of boron trioxide and silicon dioxide, which is resistant to thermal expansion and thermal shock, and exhibits little physical change at high temperatures, with significant thermal properties and Almost indestructible, it is ideal for use as a hot bed for 3D printers.
